Band Performances

Winter and Spring Concert Information

The 6th, 7th, and 8th grade band students will perform a Winter and Spring Concert. Both of these concerts are mandatory as well as the rehearsals (please refer to the calendar).  These concerts are performed at Freedom Middle School in the auditorium.  The other important concert is called "Band Assessment" which takes place in March.

All County Band

7th and 8th grade band students are encouraged to audition and participate in a band which is open to all Spotsylvania County School band students.  The audition takes place in the fall and the event is usually in March.

All District Band

7th and 8th grade band students are encouraged to audition and participate in a band which is open to all students in several surrounding counties.  The audition takes place in January and the event is usually in February.

VBODA Band Assessment

VBODA Band Assessment is the most highly regarded and respected band concert event in Virginia.  The performance takes place at various high schools annually in March.  Please see the calendar for specific dates.  The band(s) will receive a rating based on the judges' opinion on the band's overall performance quality.  This rating is published throughout the state of Virginia and on VBODA.org.

Solo and Ensemble

Solo and Ensemble is an event where the students work on a piece of music independently outside of band class. This can be a solo or an ensemble (group of two or more musicians).  Mr. Hoovler will help them choose a piece, and will need to approve it.  Students should plan at least three months ahead and purchase the music they wish to play from J.W. Pepper. Students may also utilize the "MakeMusic Cloud" software included with their method books (additional fee may be required).

Spring Trips

The 6th, 7th, and 8th grade bands are invited to go on a Spring Trip to King's Dominion (6th/7th grade) and Busch Gardens (8th grade)! We will compete, then enjoy the day in the amusement park.  Chaperones are needed!  The trips usually take place in May.
